Özet:
The belief that an individual can experience positive change when confronted with exceptionally challenging circumstances has been recognized throughout history; however, the study of this type of transformation is relatively new in clinical psychology literature and research. The term Posttraumatic Growth (PTG) describes the positive psychological change experienced by an individual as a result of struggling with a traumatic event or otherwise vastly challenging crisis (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1998). While the majority of trauma research within the field of psychology focuses on pathology, there has been a recent shift toward expectations of more adaptive outcomes post-trauma. Current literature delineates that growth occurs in terms of perception of oneself, positive changes in relationships with others, and new philosophies toward life (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1998; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). The experience of growth has been more explicitly defined and identified in five distinct dimensions: changes in relating to others, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual change, and appreciation of life (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1998; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). Despite increasing amounts of research examining clinical interventions that can facilitate the process of growth following a trauma for adults, little information exists indicating what clinical interventions could facilitate this growth in children and younger adolescents. Those interventions that do exist present little consideration for the unique developmental differences in children and young adolescents. This dissertation will outline ways in which posttraumatic growth can be facilitated in the clinical treatment of children and young adolescents.
