School superintendents are expected to be pedagogical and relationship experts in order to meet the ever-changing, high-stakes, and often emotional issues in the education world. Emotional intelligence is a vital skill that enables a superintendent to manage, use, perceive, and understand the emotions of oneself and others in order to meet district goals. This study examines the factors that influence a superintendent's emotional intelligence. Specifically, the correlational study uses quantitative methodology to determine if a relationship exists between gender, years of experience, type of school district, and size of school district and superintendents' emotional intelligence. This study focuses specifically on the superintendents from four southwestern counties in Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Westmoreland. A blend of four demographic questions and the superintendents' responses to the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test or MSCEIT are used to study the relationship between the independent variables of gender, years of experience, and type and size of school district, and the dependent variable of emotional intelligence. Analysis of the quantitative data illustrates only one independent variable---gender---as having a significant relationship with a superintendent's emotional intelligence. Although the result is significant, caution must be used when discussing this relationship, as there is ample research mitigating the importance of gender. This study also indicates that no significant relationship exists between a superintendent's years of experience and type and size of school district. These findings provide additional research regarding emotional intelligence and its role in superintendents' leadership.
