Özet:
This dissertation challenges the notion that antireligious sentiment was the dominant impetus behind the moral and social theories of the French Enlightenment and their expression in the period's literature. While the Enlightenment has traditionally been perceived as an era when reason prevailed over religion, that interpretation must be reassessed to acknowledge the role of Christian theology in the emergence of modernity. By analyzing texts by prominent authors such as Denis Diderot, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Voltaire, I have discerned distinct echoes from contemporary theological debates, biblical undertexts, and various expressions of devotion. The emphasis placed on virtue and morality in Diderot's Le Neveu de Rameau and Rousseau's La Nouvelle Heloise was not detached from Christianity but rooted in it: these authors transformed and reshaped Christian notions such as enthusiasm, the grace and sovereignty of God, free will, and predestination. My close textual readings of these works are combined with an investigation of their cultural and religious contexts: for example, the theological debate raging at the time between Jesuits and Jansenists. I also explore selected writings by Voltaire to uncover his nuanced defense of religious practice and show that his promotion of tolerance was rooted in a positive view of early Christianity. Finally, I reconstruct eighteenth-century French debates regarding the place of religion in society by examining Montesquieu's ground-breaking De l'Esprit des lois in conjunction with articles from the Encyclopedie, and Rousseau's Social Contract; I then compare the role Rousseau and Diderot gave to authentic religion in their respective scenarios of humanity in the state of nature. My analyses not only offer a different perspective on these authors but also reach beyond the dichotomous tension between faith and reason, the sacred and the secular, to propose a new account of the place of religion in eighteenth-century French literature and culture.
