Symbolic interactionism and phenomenological theories have stressed the importance of pupils' perceptions of 'significant others' on the development of their self-esteem. Contemporary theory and research has suggested that interactions within the family and the school environment are consequential to the psycho-social development of children. This study was designed to investigate the impact of Greek primary school pupils' socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, socio-economic status), academic achievement, perceptions of 'significant others' (parents, teachers, peers) and attitudes to school on their global self-esteem measured using the Lawrence Self-Esteem Questionnaire (LAWSEQ). One major aim of this investigation was to empirically investigate the relative effects of the selected variables on Greek primary school pupils' self-esteem. A total of 498 children enrolled in the fourth through sixth primary school grades participated in the study. The sample was drawn from seven state schools in the provincial town of Alexandroupolis, Greece. Pupils were classified as Low Achievers (LA), Medium Achievers (MA) and High Achievers (HA), according to their teachers ratings of academic performance in Reading and Maths which were used as achievement measures. Due to the apparent dearth of standardised research instruments in Greece, a questionnaire (Pupils' Perceptions Questionnaire - PPQ) was developed, validated and used to investigate pupils' perceptions of 'significant others' and attitudes to school. Principal components analysis revealed 6 valid and reliable scales, four concerned with perceived parental and teacher behaviours, and two with perceived peer relationships and attitudes to school. Results from analysis of variance showed no age and sex effects on self-esteem. Socioeconomic status and academic achievement were found as effective determinants. Multiple regression analyses assessed both the independent and the relative impact of pupils' socio-demographic characteristics, academic achievement, perceptions of 'significant others' and school on their global self-esteem. Path analytic techniques of model building were used to investigate the causal links between the selected variables and self-esteem. The analysis revealed that perceived peer relationships had a significant effect on self-esteem, for all groups, followed by perceived teacher positive regard for three of the groups (the whole sample, boys, and MA). However, the influences were not constant across the groups, which suggests that different processes are related to pupils' self-esteem. The findings of this study underscore the importance of peer relationships and perceived teacher behaviours on pupils' self-esteem, suggesting that children begin to shift: their attention fi-om family to extrafamilial figures earlier than anticipated.
