1. The investigation was undertaken in an effort to gain a deeper insight and understanding of the attitudes and backgrounds of graduate teachers in Scotland. The enquiry was initiated with the fairly precise aim and purpose of assisting and supplementing my research into the supply of graduate teachers in Scotland in the future. In the midst of all the uncertainties involved in making projections as to numbers of graduates in Scotland entering teaching in the future, there is an apparent relevance in studying the attitudes of graduate teachers. 2. What is wanted is far more detailed information about graduate teachers of whom we know very little. what is the image the graduate has of teaching? At what point did he decide to teach? Is teaching a residual occupation, do graduates drift into it, and is it second best for large numbers and how widespread are these issues? Is teaching a self-propagating profession? 3. These issues are important but there remain many broader and more fundamental issues and this brings us to the second problem. To what extent is the graduate, judged by his training, background, and experience, likely to be effective in a variety of teaching situations? what are his social class origins and what are the likely effects of this on the supply, teaching role and influence of the graduate teacher? The suitability of graduate teachers for the wide range of teaching assignments they have to face in secondary schools will depend in large part on their attitude to teaching in different types of schools and with different pupils. What is the attitudes of graduates to the training course and what value does he place on it? How useful does he find it and which parts are useful and which parts are not? How many subjects is he trained to teach and what is his attitude to teaching subjects in which he has not been trained? what are their attitudes to work conditions in teaching including salary, differential and promotion systems? 4. To judge the effectiveness of graduates in secondary schools and suggest ways by which they can become more effective, we need to know a great deal more about their job in the schools, We need to follow up information obtained earlier and discover for example how many teach subjects in which they have not been trained and how they react to this, Now that they are teaching how do t-hey assess the value of their teaching? In considering the efficient use of scarce graduate skills in schools we require basic information on the teacher's 'work load' - of particular interest and importance are comparisons between probationary and experienced teachers. The study considers the attitude of graduate teachers to the actual work involved in teaching: sources of professional dissatisfaction, factors in fluencing his choice of first appointment; the amount of guidance received during the first year of teaching; job satisfaction; the desire to move and teach overseas, 5. The opinions of graduate teachers on many educational issues in which they are directly involved influence their effectiveness and a knowledge of these opinions is fundamental to our understanding of the teaching process, what are their attitudes to comprehensive reorganisation, to streaming practices; at what stage should streaming be introduced in the secondary school and why? what are their opinions on the raising of the school leaving age? Finally an attempt is made to assess the impact and influence of innovation on the graduate teacher. 6, In the first stage of the investigation the information was obtained by means of a questionnaire completed by over 300 graduate students at Jordanhill in May 1967. Some of the more important findings of this stage of the enquiry formed the basis for a series of four articles which appeared in the Times Educational Supplement (Scotland) in April and May 1968. The second stage of the research took the form of a follow-enquiry into the attitudes and experiences of 50 probationary and 50 experienced teachers in secondary schools and this was conducted by means of semi-structured interviews carried out one year after the original enquiry.
