The existence of anomalous lepton events in electron-positron annihilation in the Centre of Momentum frame energy range 3 to 8 GeV is accepted as an experimental fact. By ''anomalous'' we mean that these events are not accounted for by any conventional source. Conventional sources include quantum electrodynamic processes and the production and decay of ordinary and strange hadrons. The purpose of this thesis is to explain some of the arguments which can discriminate between various proposed sources of these events. It will be shown that the single, most economical explanation of the anomalous events is that there exists a new lepton, a fermion with only weak and electromagnetic interactions, whose mass is around 2 GeV. Ways to determine the properties of such an object from the experimental data are discussed. The simplest extension of the known lepton scheme is to classify the new lepton in its own "sequential" multiplet of the Weak and Electromagnetic group SU(2)XU(1). There is no evidence against this type of lepton as an explanation of the anomalous events. While production of charmed particles contributes something to the anomalous signal it can be shown that the greater part of the signal is unexplained by charm. Various alternative hypotheses are discussed which could possibly explain the anomalous events. We find that pair-production of vector or scalar bosons is not able to explain the data. Another possibility is the production of free, integer charged, coloured quarks and gluons. This interesting possibility, when presented as part of a model, has enough flexibility to account for part of the data. When all the anomalous data is used, however, the quark decay interpretation of the anomalous events is not tenable. We are left to conclude that nature contains at least three generations of leptons and to wonder why.
