Özet:
This thesis describes the application of digital computer techniques for the collection and analysis of data to the study of the respiratory effects in man of breathing oxygen-rich gases during light exercise (below the anaerobic threshold). Some of the problems associated with the methods and the interpretation of results are discussed. Minute ventilation, its volume and time components, and gas exchange parameters were measured or derived breath by breath. For all of the variables, test sequences lasting three minutes were time-averaged for each of the six subjects; time-averages over all the subjects were also obtained. There was a decrease in ventilation accompanying the hyperoxia in 24 out of 31 test runs; in agreement with the findings of other workers, the timing of this decrease was consistent with a depression of peripheral chemoreceptor activity. The data suggest that this decrease is not maintained; the possible causes of a subsequent elevation are discussed. Examination of changes in tidal volume and inspiratory and expiratory time failed to show a pattern common to a sizeable subset of the subjects.
