This thesis is concerned with an applied statistical analysis of determinants of academic ability in Kenyan secondary schools. Data was available on variables in respect of all candidates taking Cambridge School Certificate (CSC) 0 grades in 1969. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction about the variables in the file KENYA9 including the presentation of the CSC grades distributions. In Chapter 2 two topics are discussed: (i) Comparison of male/female CSC grades. (ii) Comparisons between subjects. In Chapter 3 the two main tools of statistical inference were applied to study parental influence. These are the hypotheses tests and interval estimates. The hypotheses tests for the equality between the effect of father's and mother's education and father's and mother's english for combined sexes and for each sex separately, were discussed with assessment of where differences exist by calculating the interval estimates. Further analyses were applied to test for symmetry between the influences of mothers and fathers. In Chapter 4 measurements of the following are derived: difficulty of subjects, ease of subjects, aspiration of candidates, parental influence, and ability of candidates. In Chapter 5 the assessment of the variation in the explanatory variables was discussed by analysis of variance and analysis of covariance methods. First we start with one way layout with examples and then with two way layout with interaction. The method of analysis of covariance was applied to three factors and three covariates with all possibilities of fitting factors first and then covariates and vice versa. The results are presented in ANCOVA tables and lattice diagrams. In the appendices are lists of all programs used, tables of cross classifications, and the ANOVA tables for the evidence of significant interaction between factors.
