A study of the validity of three independent variables, the British Ability Scales intelligence test, two tests from the NFER Learning Ability Tests (Haynes), and a Verbal Learning Assessment Battery (Parkins) of seven verbal learning ability tests, has been carried out with Primary School children over a period of three years. The predictive validity of the three independent variables in terms of learning ability has been determined on the basis of a number of dependent measures obtained on four occasions over the three years. One set of dependent measures was made up of retrospective teacher estimates of pupil learning ability. The other set of dependent measures was made up of a range of attainment tests including the British Picture Vocabulary Scale, the British Ability Scales Word Reading Test, The Salford Sentence Reading Test, The Neale Analysis of Reading Ability, and the British Ability Scales Basic Number Skills Test. In addition, the predictive validity of individual tests from within the three independent measures was considered. Also considered was the relationship between certain British Ability Scales tests which had particular information processing characteristics and certain tests or test combinations from the Parkins Verbal Learning Assessment Battery. Correlation and regression analyses of the data obtained indicated that overall the British Ability Scales IQ measure was a better predictor of learning ability than either of the learning ability tests (Haynes or Parkins). However, a group of the tests from the Parkins Verbal Learning Assessment Battery did prove the best predictor of Word Reading. At a more detailed level the data analyses indicated that a number of individual tests were particularly related to reading skills: the British Ability Scales Digit Span, Recall of Designs, and Word Definitions, and the Parkins Verbal Learning Assessment Battery learning of picture names test (VLT1). Also implicated in reading related skills were the British Ability Scales Matching of Letter Like Forms and Speed of Information Processing. Analysis of residual scores indicated that of these individual tests the ones which appeared to be most ' causally' related to subsequent reading skills were: British Ability Scales Recall of Digits and Recall of Designs, and Parkins Verbal Learning Assessment Battery learning of picture names (VLT1). Certain results indicated that there are individual differences in the effect of pictorial information on performance in very basic reading related processes. Data analyses also indicated that certain individual tests were particulartly related to basic number skills: British Ability Scales Matrices, Speed of Information Processing, Recall of Designs, and Similarities.
