Özet:
This thesis examines the behaviour of health service professionals with regard to Evidence Based Practice. The nature of professionals' behaviour with regard to Evidence Based Practice was viewed as problematic. This was the result of many quantitative studies of interventions to get research into practice, which had shown that there was no method that guaranteed success in all contexts. There was clearly a need for research using qualitative methods that could offer greater insight into the practitioners' behaviour. This study has therefore used qualitative methodology to explore the issue of Evidence Based Practice and professional behaviour, using the techniques of the case study approach, ethnography, marginal observation, telephone interviews, semi-structured in-depth interviews and a novel approach named "the drawing technique". The study took place in a National Health Service Community Trust, an organisation providing primary care services, with a low level of research activity. The main focus of this study is a case study of a mechanism, the Action Learning Set, chosen by the Trust to enable the practitioners to learn how to get research into practice. The key findings of the study are; The process of getting research into practice is complex, non-linear and context dependent. The structure of the organisation has a major influence on the behaviour of professionals with regard to Evidence Based Practice The hierarchical structure of the NHS where power and authority resides with the managers of the organisation constrains the ability of the practitioner to use their knowledge to change clinical practice. A high level of education through Continuing Professional Development is closely associated with a positive attitude towards getting research into practice. Strong co-operative relationships facilitate the development of Evidence Based Practice.
