Özet:
Cognitive models of depression suggest that attention for dysphoric information contributes to the onset, maintenance, and course of depression. Empirical studies support these cognitive models, and building off this work it is plausible that attentional biases for positive information could increase resilience against depression. Certain psychological resilience factors are associated with protective effects against depressive symptoms. At this time no studies have investigated if resilience factors have an impact on attentional biases related to emotional information. This study examined whether elevated levels of resilience factors influence attentional biases for dysphoric and positive information. We expected that elevated levels of resilience would be positively associated with attention for positive information and negatively associated with dysphoric information. We also anticipated that increased levels of resilience factors would be associated with decreases in depressive symptoms. Finally, we expected that any relationship between resilience factors and attention for emotional information would be mediated by depressive symptoms. Ninety-three participants completed the study. Depressive symptoms, hope, and optimism were assessed via self-report measures. A free viewing eye-tracking task was used to assess attention for positive, dysphoric, threatening, and neutral stimuli. Results of regression analyses indicated that elevated levels of hope were associated with reduced attentional biases for dysphoric information, but neither resilience factor (hope or optimism) was associated with increased attention for positive information. Moreover, elevated levels of resilience factors were associated with decreased depressive symptoms. The relationship between depressive symptoms and attention for dysphoric information was mediated by levels of hope. This study was the first to examine the relationship between resilience factors and attentional biases for emotional information. Additionally, the results concerning the relationship between resilience and attention for dysphoric information imply that resilience factors may buffer against depressive symptoms by reducing attentional biases for dysphoric information. As this study did not involve any experimental manipulation, no inferences can be drawn concerning the causal nature of this relationship. Future studies could involve the use of an experimental manipulation in order to truly assess if increases in resilience factors actually result in decreased attentional biases for dysphoric information.
