There has been a rapid increase in the amount of debt accumulated by citizens of the United States, especially among minority populations. As the number of high school students pursuing college degrees is rising, so is the amount of debt and credit card use. In fact, 60% of students are going into their first year of college concerned about having enough money for basic daily expenses and African American students represent nearly one-third of that percentage. College students have indicated that finances are the second most impactful stressor behind academics and the amount of stress is growing as higher education costs become more expensive and more burdensome. Financial problems students face can have an adverse effect on their psychological well-being. There is a need to examine the factors that may contribute to the financial stress and adverse psychological well-being of African American college students. The current study examined the relationship between spending behaviors, cultural identity (materialism in particular), and mindfulness and financial stress and depression. The study also examined if materialism and mindfulness interacted with spending behavior in affecting financial stress and depression. A convenience sample of 217 students from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) (age Mean = 20.42, SD =1.47) participated in this study. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between materialism and financial stress, and a significant negative relationship between mindfulness and financial stress and depression. However, neither materialism nor mindfulness had an interaction effect with spending behavior on financial stress or depression. The results suggest that colleges and universities should be aware of the need to provide financial literacy programs as well as other psychoeducation interventions such as mindfulness, which could be useful in improving psychological health and overall well-being of African American students.
