The encroachment of woody plants into the grasslands of the southern Great Plains has become a major concern due to the alteration of ecosystem processes and services provided by the grasslands. An important change relates to soil carbon stocks and inputs as this affects carbon cycling, productivity, and carbon sequestration. This study determined changes in the nature and quantity of organic matter inputs following encroachment by two woody native species (Quercus marilandica and Juniperus viriginiana) invading a grassland in northcentral Oklahoma, and related it to spatial heterogeneity in soil carbon stocks. To assess changes in total carbon inputs with woody encroachment, I quantified total root biomass in the open prairie and under tree canopies, used litter traps to quantify total aboveground litter inputs, and litter bags to assess changes in litter decomposition. Carbon inputs varied with distance from tree trunk. Total aboveground litter input and root biomass were greater under trees than in the open prairie. However, as a result of reduced soil moisture, soil temperature and transmitted photosynthetically activity radiation under tree canopies, decomposition rates were greater in the prairie than under tree canopy. However, leaf litter from trees decomposed faster than grass litter regardless of location. Soil carbon concentration decreased with distance from tree trunk. These results suggest that the increased amount of litter and roots along with faster rates of decomposition for litter from tree species compared to grasses contributed to greater soil carbon concentrations under tree canopies. The invasion of woody plants in the grasslands increases spatial heterogeneity of soil carbon inputs from above- and belowground resulting in a change of soil carbon concentration.
