Özet:
The current experiments investigated the social component of prospective memory (PM), or memory for future actions. The specific aim was to identify mechanisms to improve PM performance by capitalizing on the increased importance and processing experienced under tasks with social beneficiaries. Participants in both studies were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in which the beneficiary of PM task completion was manipulated: social familiar (friend), social unfamiliar (unknown participant), self-reward, or control (no mention of beneficiary). Experiment 1 extended previous findings to address PM beliefs for a task with different social beneficiaries. Contrary to predictions, there were no significant differences between conditions on task importance and likelihood of task completion ratings. Experiment 2 paralleled and extended findings from Experiment 1 by measuring actual PM performance . Contrary to predictions, PM performance did not differ between conditions. Follow-up questions in both experiments explored differences in motivations underlying memory performance. Interestingly, participants rated tasks that benefitted a friend as more important than tasks that benefitted a stranger. Findings from these studies added to the relatively small literature on social importance and PM. Although several of the original hypotheses were not supported, the current studies provide support for the need for further research with methodological corrections to better understand how social PM tasks are accomplished.
