Riot Grrrl was a feminist punk movement during the 90s that orginated in the Pacific Northwest. Riot Grrrl spurned bands and artwork that reflected the lives and hopes of its female participants and creators. Handmade pamphlets called “zines” were created and distributed by Riot Grrrls to spread their personal stories and feminist visions of a better world for women and girls. This paper examines the influence of the history of feminism, punk, and women’s magazines on Riot Grrrl and highlights prominent zines from the era. It also illustrates the effect of Riot Grrrl on contemporary zines and media being produced by young women today.
