Özet:
In 2009, the National Research Council published a report entitled Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward. The Strengthening Forensic Science report calls for forensic disciplines to address issues of accuracy, reliability, and validity with scientific research. In response to this report, I conducted research to address accuracy, reliability, and validity in the field of Criminal Profiling.
Criminal Profiling encompasses a wide range of methodologies, which I placed into 3 major categories: observation-based, theoretical methodologies; behavioral evidence analysis methodology; and statistical methodologies. This study examines the reliability of a statistical profiling methodology known as Crime Action Profiling (CAP) by comparing 6 offender characteristics CAP methodology predicts in a sample of 25 sexual assault cases to population demographics in the area where the sample was taken from. This research hypothesizes that the 6 offender characteristics that would be predicted from the sample of cases will not be significantly different from the same offender characteristics determined using population demographics in the sample area.
Population demographics predicted the same offender characteristics as the sample on 4 out of 6 variables. A one-population test of proportions confirmed that 3 out of 6 of these variables were not significantly different than characteristics predicted from the sample cases.
