Özet:
The academic preparation of aspiring child life specialists and child life administrators has increased. Experts in the field of child life are aiming to develop leadership skills in these two groups of health care professionals. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine what child life administrators perceived as effective leadership development. The 12 participants in this study were certified child life specialists in an administrator role in a clinical setting, had 10 -38 years of experience, and obtained at least one graduate level degree in child life or child life related field. All interviews were conducted online through a video conferencing program. The conceptual framework was an adaptation of the Clinical Leadership Competency Framework, which originally was designed as a competency based tool measuring the planning, delivery, and transformation of health services. The key findings were (a) formal academic education in child life and leadership, (b) on-the-job training, (c) organizational professional development courses focused on leadership, and (d) the use of mentors---all of which impacted the effectiveness of child life administrators within their health care organizations and contributed to their leadership development. Implications and recommendations for the development of child life administrators were as follows: (1) provide an administrative track to graduate level course work, including an additional practicum or internship for child life specialists interested in pursuing a leadership position, (2) make professional development opportunities available in healthcare settings to the emerging leader, and (3) provide two mentors for professional growth and further leadership development.
