Diabetes is a severe chronic disease that has affected over 400 million individuals worldwide. It occurs when the body cannot efficiently produce or utilize insulin. The aims of this research are to determine the state of diabetes health literacy in college students, to determine whether service learning has an impact on diabetes health literacy, and finally to determine the impact of active learning on students' learning. As a required part of a Concepts in Biology I course taken primarily by science majors, students were asked to choose from 8 different biology projects outside of the classroom. These included service learning projects as well as independent projects. In a separate active learning activity, students completed a case study relating cell signaling concepts to diabetes. To assess the efficacy of these interventions, participants were asked to complete a pre- and post-intervention health literacy survey. Students also completed pre- and post-intervention content exams covering the biology content. Finally, students were also invited to complete a survey about student assessment of learning gains, to help the instructors gain student perspectives on which materials / resources were effective. In order to determine the change in diabetes literacy, paired t-tests were performed on the pre- and post-intervention survey. For overall diabetes literacy, the post-test scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores at p-value ≤ 0.05. In addition, the survey was divided into five categories about the symptoms and results of diabetes, diagnosis, and treatment, diabetes mechanism, risk factors, and prevention. The result was shown only in the symptoms and outcomes category, where students' post-test scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores at p-value ≤ 0.05. Finally, we used indirect evidence to assess the impact of active learning on students' knowledge using the Student Assessment of Learning Gains survey. The vast majority of students said that active learning helped their learning. The results of this study support our hypothesis on the effects of service learning and active learning. This study recommends that future research should increase sample size, increase project time, and establish more effective ways of implementing students' knowledge.
