Özet:
Student health services (SHS), or clinics located on college and university campuses, provide preventative, acute, and chronic care. SHS availability is associated with improved health outcomes and academic success, yet rural regional campuses often lack SHS, requiring students to travel to the main campus. While SHS located on rural campuses would address access barriers, research is limited regarding the specific health challenges rural students experience.
The purpose of the research was to characterize current student health status and explore specific health services needs on a rural two-year regional campus in South Carolina. This descriptive study used data from an anonymous survey distributed at two freshman orientation sessions, and included questions on current health status, physical activity, nutrition, sexual health, substance abuse and acute/chronic disease. Descriptive statistics were calculated using SPSS statistical software.
Of the 140 respondents, the majority were white (67%), enrolled full-time (91%), living with a parent (91%), and insured (82%). Most students classified themselves in good to excellent health (88%) and "about the right weight" (59%); 37% had a BMI in the overweight to obese range. The most common chronic illnesses were allergies (22%), migraine headaches (11%), and asthma (7%); the most common infectious illnesses were sinusitis (13%), group A strep pharyngitis (11%), and urinary tract infections (4%). Over 50% were sexually active, with 31% never or rarely using condoms. Substance abuse was infrequent; only 13% had consumed alcohol in the last five days, 10% used marijuana in the last month, and 11% used tobacco products in the past. Immunizations were suboptimal, with 41% receiving at least one dose of HPV and only 31% receiving the influenza vaccine in the previous year.
Student health status and healthcare needs on rural regional campuses have been previously underexplored. These results demonstrate the need for SHS addressing immunizations, sexual health education, and common illness intervention. The results will be used to determine feasibility/acceptability of a targeted, nurse practitioner-run SHS.
