Özet:
The purpose of this basic qualitative analysis was to analyze the educational experiences of students from impoverished backgrounds. The study identifies resources schools can offer to address the state of poverty that exists for students. In order to achieve this overall objective, the following research questions framed the study: 1. What factors influence a person from an impoverished background to improve their social-economic situation? 2. What educational resources, if any, influence a person from an impoverished background to improve their social-economic situation?
So that these research questions could be examined, two different data collection methods were used---interviews and follow-up interviews. Through six initial interviews and six follow-up interviews with participants who met the criteria to be eligible for the study, it was determined that 1) students had parents who had struggled economically while raising their children, and yet encouraged the students to do better, and 2) students who are not taught according to grit ideology, but demonstrate grit themselves, are positively impacted in leaving the state of poverty. Additionally, the study found that 1) students exposed to a college and career readiness culture and have opportunities for vocational classes in high school are positively impacted in their pursuit of post-secondary education or training, and 2) students who have positive relationships with their teachers and receive positive encouragement from those teachers have a higher self-efficacy and a better belief in their abilities.
