Özet:
Individuals who sustain a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) display a spectrum of complex medical, cognitive, functional, and emotional impairments that require ongoing assessment paired with restorative and compensatory strategies to maximize treatment outcomes. For youth who sustain a TBI, school professionals have a duty to provide educational support and transition services, as well as continued care to improve healing and functional recovery, promote learning, and foster independence. This single-case archival study examined outcomes of an attention focused neurocognitive rehabilitation program, Brainwave-R, implemented in the school setting with a female youth survivor of severe TBI approximately 3-and-a-half years post-TBI. Paired samples t tests and analysis of descriptive statistics suggested significant improvement in raw score performance in the areas of attention/speed, attentional switching, and sustained attention on the Test of Everyday Attention (TEA) following treatment. These findings were further corroborated by the classroom teacher's improved ratings on Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function---Adult Version (BRIEF-A) from pre to post intervention. The participant's self-ratings of attention on the BRIEF-A declined following treatment, perhaps as a result of her gaining insight about her injury and its lasting impact on her functioning. This finding was supported by ad hoc descriptive data analyses that compared the participant's predictions and actual performance on intervention tasks to examine changes in self-awareness and/or insight about her cognitive abilities post-TBI as a result of participation in treatment. This study aims to contribute to rehabilitation literature by proposing school professionals, particularly school psychologists, become familiar with ongoing treatment and supports for youth with TBI.
