Özet:
Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with everyday functioning and/or development in two or more settings (e.g. home, school, work, etc.) Research is ongoing to determine the nature of ADHD through molecular studies and brain imaging techniques. Surveying parents of children who are diagnosed with, or have symptoms of, ADHD may be helpful in understanding their perceptions of symptom etiology, whether information provision is helpful, and if psychiatric genetic counseling (PGC) services would be appropriate.
Objective/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to identify and explore how information provided in an educational video impacts the participants, identify and explore the parental perspectives on the cause of ADHD in their children, and determine interest in PGC among this population.
Design/Methods: Online surveys were distributed with the help of the organization Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) and Facebook to parents 18+ who have at least one child with a diagnosis or symptoms of ADHD. Surveys contained both demographic and targeted family history questions related to ADHD, the genetic counseling outcome scale (GCOS-24), the Causal Attribution Scale (CAS), and the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). After completing these pre-questionnaires, participants watched a standardized, educational video. Following the video, participants completed the GCOS-24 a second time and answered open-ended questions.
Results: This pilot study showed that information provision was beneficial to some participants. However, significance was not reached (p=0.109) due to less participation than needed for power. Still, for those who completed the study some benefits of watching the video include "reduced stigmatization & understanding" and "better the outcomes". Of 27 participants, 14 would like to talk to a health professional about the medical, psychological, and familial implications of the genetic contributions to ADHD.
Discussion: These results indicate an interest in further discussion with a genetic counselor trained in discussing hereditary components of ADHD and other psychiatric conditions. Specifically, this information can be useful in broadening the scope of PGC to include families affected with ADHD. Future research can be conducted with this population to determine if PGC services are beneficial.
