Background: The transition of students from home life to a college lifestyle is a challenging journey involving environmental, physical, and social adjustments which significantly impact dietary choices. This is a critical time in college students' lives considering many of them now gain total control of their eating behaviors. Vending machines are a contributing factor to unhealthy food environments, often offer limited healthy snack choices, and make snacks high in energy and low in nutrients easily available for consumers. Purpose: This cross-sectional research study examined the use of vending machines among college students in a public university. The research determined how often students used vending machines on campus, factors that influence their purchasing behavior and their interest in the availability of healthy choice indication at the point of purchase. Setting: The research study took place in classrooms on the Southern Connecticut State University campus in New Haven, CT (SCSU) Participants: Randomly selected undergraduate students were invited to participate in the research study (N = 102). The students were at least 18 years or older and were enrolled in Tier 1 and Tier 2 classes Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by participants. Analysis: Frequencies, and percentages were used to analyze survey data. Results: On average, most students used vending machines one to two times a week (51.7%). Most participants (75%) reported they would prefer healthy choice labeling of vending machine foods, and 64.6% said the availability of food labels would impact their purchasing behavior. Students rated most of the current foods on the SCSU vending machine as unhealthy or very unhealthy. Chocolate bars (51.2%), gummies (28.6%), and pastries were rated as very unhealthy by participants. Most students (70.2%) found granola bars to be the healthiest options in the vending machines. Overall, students reported a desire for the availability of healthier options in vending machines like fresh fruit, vegetables, hummus, yogurt, gluten and dairy free options, as well as less sugary snacks.
