Özet:
This qualitative, phenomenological study investigated the balance of rights in an inclusion classroom between two student groups, general education students and special education students identified as emotionally disturbed. Purposeful snowball sampling was utilized to secure 10 participants who were interviewed face to face using a guided protocol based on the research questions. The findings indicated a perception of an imbalance of rights between the special education emotionally disturbed student and the general education student. Additional emergent themes included the loss of educational rights due to violence, peer interactions and variables within the classroom environment. Themes emerged relating to the ARD process including the need for committee training, the need for real life data relating to the student, increased awareness of their decisions impact on all students, the powerful impact of parents in the ARD process and the need for additional special education training for all members of the committee. Implications for practice centered around additional educator training on proper classroom supports for teachers and students, implementation of best practices for the inclusion of emotionally disturbed students, improved data collection for ARD meeting decision making regarding placement of EBD students, and behavior modification strategies focused on an interval strategy.
