Özet:
As an organizational form that spans the boundaries between traditional notions of the private, public and non-profit sectors, social enterprises focus on the creation of social value while simultaneously working to ensure financial stability. This duality in objectives creates a challenge for social entrepreneurial founding teams, who often must navigate conflicting demands. Within this context, the empirical studies in this dissertation capture two early stage growth processes: identity formation and goal emergence. Identity formation is described through a narrative lens, in which actors utilize various cognitive tactics to manage and resolve the tensions between their conflicting identities over time. Goal emergence is found to be a reactive and dynamic process involving an element of incremental change, or 'drift', over time. Taken together, the current research describes both identity and goal emergence as dynamic and increasingly complex processes, and highlights the role and reactivity of organizational actors in shaping outcomes over time.
