Özet:
Pediatric obesity is a substantiated public health epidemic that affects children and adolescents throughout the globe. This epidemic is all encompassing, severely affecting the physical, social, and mental well-being of individuals. The aim of this research is to explore the effects that socioeconomic status has on pediatric obesity. Socioeconomic status directly influences the quality of individuals' life circumstances, including quality of residential neighborhood, accessibility to healthy foods, and dietary habits. These circumstances are indicative to the outcome of pediatric obesity. Specifically, low socioeconomic status is correlated with a lower quality of residential neighborhood as it relates to accessibility to healthy nutritional foods and unhealthy dietary habits. School and community-based physical activity and nutritional education programs are effective interventions for preventing and stabilizing the progression of pediatric obesity. Programs in which implement these interventions at the school and community levels as well as incorporate a school wellness policy, are effective at reducing obesity among those with preexisting obesity. The establishment of all-inclusive local school wellness policies and programs are necessary for the long-term reduction of pediatric obesity. It is recommended that social work practice and policy place an emphasis on using education as a tool to increase knowledge of healthy lifestyle practices among underserved at risk communities.
