Özet:
There were approximately 427,910 children who entered the foster care system in 2015 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). Due to the vulnerability of this population, it is crucial that professionals focus on the needs and attachment issues foster children face. This project will focus on the attachment issues foster children experience due to maltreatment and separation from their primary caregivers. Foster children are more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems when compared to non-foster care children (Deans et al., 2015). These children also have cognitive and adaptive development issues (Goemans et al., 2015). Many foster children have a difficult time forming a secure attachment with substitute caregivers due to their adverse experiences (Lang et al., 2016; Moutsiana et al., 2015; Ribaudo, 2016). The literature states that there are protective factors that increase the likelihood that foster children can develop a secure attachment.
Attachment Bio-behavioral Catch-Up (ABC) intervention has been found useful in improving caregiver sensitivity, parenting quality and enhancing attachment quality. Research has also been conducted to explore the effectiveness of several parent training, such as Keeping Foster Parents Trained and Supported (KEEP), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Parent Management Training Oregon (PMTO). Such studies have found that KEEP and PCIT are useful in helping parents modify their behavior and reduce child behavior problems. The findings of this research propose practice and policy implications for social work. The literature presented gaps in research and areas for future research.
