Özet:
Introduction: Child behavioral problems are associated with parental physical assault, but theoretically there is a gap in the analysis of child factors associated with it. Additionally, while ecological factors are known to influence outcomes like criminal behavior, no study has examined their influence on parental assault of infants.
Studies: An adaptation of Target Congruence Theory informed two tests to determine if adolescent (ages 11-15) or infant (0-25 months) behavior problems/temperament (target antagonism) and health and weight for age (target vulnerability) at Wave 1 predicted odds of assault at Wave 2. Finally, ecological theories informed an approach to study if county arrest rate and parent race or immigrant status predicted assault at Wave 2.
Methods: The National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being II (NSCAW II) was analyzed longitudinally from Wave 1 to 2 using multivariate logistic regression and conditional effect plots.
Results: Study 1 (N=549) found that vulnerability and antagonism, measured by overweight and behavioral problems, increased odds of assault of adolescents (p<.05). Study 2 (N=1,386) found that vulnerability acted as a protective factor for infants, even when antagonism was high (p<.001). Study 3 (N=1,386) showed that risk of assault increased for Whites, decreased from moderate to low probability for African-Americans, and dropped sharply for Hispanics as county arrest rate increased (p<.01). A secondary regression stratified results by immigrant status (n=124; Hispanic immigrant n=100), finding that immigrants were less likely to physically assault infants as county arrest rate increased, while native born were more likely (p<.05).
Discussion: Study 1 results indicate that Target Congruence for parental physical assault of adolescents may be a combination of target durability (not vulnerability) and antagonism; bigger adolescents are more likely to suffer a physical assault by parents when they exhibit behavioral problems. Results for Study 2 suggest implications for evolutionary theory that highly vulnerable infants may be protected from parental assault in order to increase odds of survival. Results for Study 3 indicate that increases in neighborhood danger is predictive of physical assault risk for Whites, but that minorities and immigrants are less likely to commit physical assault of infants as neighborhood danger increases.
