Özet:
Women with a history of childhood role confusion and trauma may be at risk for role confusion with their own children, due to poor emotion regulation and maladaptation within their own caregiving systems. Mothers' exposure to trauma contributes to disrupting the caregiving system causing dysregulated caregiving due to feeling helpless as a provider of protection. Mothers' with dysregulated caregiving systems are more likely to abdicate care in the form of role confusion. Role confusion puts an unusual burden on children to take over the role of protector in the mother-child dyadic relationship instead of being protected by the caregiver. This study examined the relations between childhood role confusion, attachment trauma, and emotion regulation capacity to a maternal representation of role confusion with her own child. Mothers (N=140) of children between ages 2 and 5 years of age reported on their own attachment trauma, adult stressful events, emotion regulation capacity, childhood role confusion, and maternal representations of themselves as caregivers. The results from this study suggest that mothers' self-inflicted trauma, emotion regulation capacity, and childhood role confusion were significantly related to maternal representations of role confusion. Mothers' reporting of helplessness and fear was positively related to self-trauma and emotion regulation. There was a significant association between partner trauma exposure and mothers' reports of helplessness. Mothers' reports of child caregiving were significantly related to having appropriate boundaries with their father during childhood. These results are discussed in light of developmental risks for children and implications to the Infant Mental Health field.
