Özet:
Since the mid-1990s, phishing has taken over email as a means of retrieving personal information from unsuspecting users. When successful, phishing can cost individuals and companies thousands upon millions of dollars in order to recover; the average 10,000-employee company spends 3.7 million dollars a year handling phishing attacks (Korolov, 2015). As a result, it is important to be able to recognize when an email is not genuine and is in fact a scam. In order to be able to identify phishing emails, this study looks at how persuasion is conveyed in order to convince the recipient to release their information. By drawing on seminal work from Austin (1962) on speech acts and Cialdini (2007) on persuasion principles, this study will explore how speech acts, topic organization, and demonstrations of power all aid in the phishers' pursuit of persuading the recipient. The findings demonstrate that threats (commissives) and declaratives (performatives) are common means of persuasion. Further, organizing the email so that the recipient has a clear understanding of what is trying to be achieved assists the persuasion. Lastly, the findings show that expressions of power including occupations, recognized companies, or simply the use of influential words that suggest superiority, all facilitate the persuasive goal of the sender. Though there are other ways of identifying a persuasive email from a genuine one beyond the persuasive language, such as through typos, false email addresses, or incorrect websites, keeping the findings from this study in mind can help discern a scam email from a real email. Every phishing email needs to persuade its recipient in some capacity in order to be successful; by being able to identify how the persuasion is achieved, this study hopes to decrease the overall number of successful phishing scams that occur daily.
