Özet:
This qualitative case study determination was to explore the reasons elementary teachers are resigning from urban South Eastern public schools in the United States. The purpose of this study focused on uncovering emergent themes regarding both helpful and hindering factors associated with elementary teachers' success within the classroom. More importantly, the purpose of this study focused on reasons why licensed and trained elementary teachers would rather resign than remain faithful to the profession. The research questions used to uncover emergent themes that current licensed teachers feel could lead to elementary classroom teacher resignations were: RQ1. What factors are perceived by teachers to most affect elementary teacher resignations in an urban South Eastern public school district in the United States? RQ2. What actions are perceived by elementary teachers to be effective at reducing elementary teacher resignations in an urban South Eastern public school district in the United States? The selected instrumentation involved semi-structured interviews, direct-observation, researcher notes, and transcripts. Content analysis of the data resulted in identifying factors associated with elementary teacher resignations. Conclusions were that student discipline issues and lack of principal support may cause an elementary teacher to resign from the profession, and lighter workloads for teachers, more general support for teachers, and more teacher benefits may cause a teacher to stay in the profession. Consideration of these findings could provide educational administrators and school leaders with a better understanding of ways to effectively retain elementary teachers before they resign from the profession.
