The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the degree to which employee perception of person-supervisor fit was related to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, and job satisfaction. It was not known if or to what degree employee perception of person-supervisor fit was related to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, and job satisfaction. The study explored three hypothesized relationships between person-supervisor fit and extrinsic motivation, person-supervisor fit and intrinsic motivation, and person-supervisor fit and job satisfaction, looking for evidence of significant correlational relationships. Two hundred employees working full-time (35 hours or more per week) in the United States were selected by purposive sampling. Participants completed an online survey consisting of a three-item person-supervisor fit scale, a three-item extrinsic motivation subscale, a three-item intrinsic motivation subscale, and a three-item job satisfaction scale. Kendall's tau-b correlation analyses measured the strength and direction of each of the hypothesized relationships. The study data supported the conclusion that extrinsic motivation (Tb = .17, p < .01), intrinsic motivation (T b = .36, p < .01), and job satisfaction ( Tb = .36, p < .01), have positive correlational relationships with person-supervisor fit, supporting the similarity/attraction theory and the supplementary fit theory of person-environment congruence. Future research should focus on expanding the body of knowledge on person-supervisor fit by conducting more quantitative and qualitative studies with person-supervisor fit as the primary variable, as it is underexplored.
