The researcher used a nonexperimental quantitative research design to study the effects of innovation potential on transformational leadership styles of behavior in a U.S.-based research development organization, using the Innovation Potential Indicator (IPI) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Transformational leadership styles of behavior have been found to influence follower creativity and innovation in the workplace (Bass & Avolio, 2004), yet no study was found during this publication that examined if there were significant effects between innovation potential and transformational leadership styles of behavior using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). A total of 62 participants volunteered (N = 57) to take two questionnaires, the IPI and the MLQ. Based on the nonexperimental quantitative method, the results failed to reject the null hypothesis. The study contributed scientific evidence by examining and characterizing the effect of innovation potential, measured as traits and abilities, and self-perceived transformational leadership styles of behavior. The study is important to psychology and leadership students and practitioners in academic and occupational settings. The study is rooted in Bass's transformational leadership theory, full range leadership theory, the personality trait theory, implicit leadership theory, and Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory, all which provide frameworks for defining the constructs and characterizing our understanding about the nature of their relationship. The researcher recommends further studies be conducted to address the gaps in research about the conceptual clarity of innovation potential and its effect on transformational leadership styles of behavior.
