Özet:
Purpose: 1) To determine if acute exposure to moderate, normobaric hypoxia alters central and peripheral fatigue during prolonged running. 2) To test whether ingesting a carbohydrate solution during a 1 h run in hypoxia impacts fatigue development. Methods: Twelve trained runners completed three running trials lasting 1 h each at 65% of normoxic VO2max. The first trial was performed in normoxia (FIO 2 = 0.21) and the last two trials were completed in hypoxia (F IO2 = 0.15). At minutes 15, 30, and 45 of exercise in normoxia, participants ingested a non-caloric placebo beverage (NORM-PLA). At minutes 15, 30, and 45 of exercise in hypoxia, participants ingested either a placebo (HYP-PLA) or a 6% carbohydrate solution (HYP-CHO). Peripheral fatigue was assessed via pre- to post-exercise changes in magnetically evoked potentiated quadriceps twitch force (DeltaQtw,pot). Central fatigue was evaluated as the pre- to post-exercise change in voluntary muscle activation (DeltaVA). During hypoxia trials, blood was drawn from an antecubital vein pre- and post-exercise to determine the impact of carbohydrate ingestion on the ratio of free-tryptophan (f-TRP) to branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). Results: When comparing normoxia to hypoxia, DeltaQtw,pot was significantly reduced in both NORM-PLA (-4.5 +/- 1.3%) and HYP-PLA (-4.0 +/- 1.5%), to a similar degree between conditions (P = 0.61, ES 011). DeltaVA was significantly reduced in both conditions, but to a greater degree in HYP-PLA (-4.1 +/- 1%) compared to NORM-PLA (-1.6 +/- 1%; P = 0.01, ES 1.15). During hypoxia visits, DeltaVA was significantly reduced in both HYP-PLA (-4.2 +/- 1%) and HYP-CHO (-5.4 +/- 1%), to a similar degree between conditions (P = 0.29, ES 0.29). No differences were observed in the ratio of f-TRP to BCAA between HYP-PLA and HYP-CHO ( P = 0.67). Conclusions: One hour of running at 65% VO 2max in normoxia resulted in peripheral and central fatigue. When running for the same duration, and at the same absolute intensity in hypoxia, the hypoxic environment amplified central, but not peripheral, fatigue. Furthermore, central fatigue occurred despite the ratio of f-TRP to BCAA remaining unchanged. Finally, ingesting carbohydrates during running exercise in hypoxia did not influence fatigue development.
