Background: Childhood cancer survivors are living longer. Therefore, the possibility of developing late effects like learning problems has the potential to affect their educational attainment. This study aims to examine risk factors associated with childhood cancer that may affect educational attainment.
Methods: A systematic review of electronic databases was conducted to identify studies that assessed risk factors associated with poor educational attainment among childhood cancer survivors of all types of cancers. Peer-reviewed articles were included and excluded using the following criteria: completed on/after 2000, population-based studies (sample size >100), survival of ≥5 years, all childhood cancer types, and educational attainment was the main outcome.
Results: Of 295 articles identified 18 met inclusion criteria. Poor education attainment was associated with central nervous system (CNS) tumors survivors (13 studies), cranial radiation therapy (7 studies), chemotherapy treatment (3 studies), being a female (11 studies), and diagnosed at an earlier age (8 studies) or diagnosed prior to 1980 (4 studies). The most common association found was CNS tumors, diagnosed at an early age, and being a female survivor was associated with poorer educational achievements.
Conclusion: A variety of studies were used to assess risk factors associated with education in different areas of the world and settings. Poor education is related to poor health outcomes and well-being. By understanding that survivors diagnosed with CNS tumors, at an early age, or being a female can affect educational attainment negatively. Public health officials can develop interventions geared towards these survivors to improve education levels and well-being.
