Özet:
Sexually transmitted infections and unplanned teenage pregnancies are a significant issue in the United States, especially in the southern region known as the Bible Belt. Despite documented proof that abstinence-only education is not effective, it is still federally funded and taught in public schools. In rural areas with little-to-no public health resources, and abstinence-only programming, there is a unique population at risk for sexual health issues. A confounding factor is the overwhelming Christian culture of the Bible Belt. The current study, informed by a preliminary study, explored how Christian religious leaders define and approach sexual health topics with their 'flock' as well as the leaders' perceptions of the impact Christianity has on sexual health of the congregations. Participants included White, Protestant religious leaders in a rural county in Middle Tennessee. Using qualitative inquiry, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The themes that emerged from the study were: 1) sexual health definitions are multidimensional, 2) sex is only in the context of marriage, 3) there is change in church message regarding sex, 4) adolescents are the primary audience for discussions about sexual health, 5) LGBTQ issues are a common topic in churches today, and 6) leaders feel confident about advice and resources. Future research should focus on a collaboration between church leaders and the public health sources that are available, as well as the shift in culture that is slowly occurring to include acceptance and discussions about sexual health education.
