Özet:
The literature suggests that due to the sensitive developmental period, repetitive/cumulative manifestation, and interpersonal nature of early childhood complex trauma, survivors often present with complex symptoms that are considerably different from experiences of acute or adult-onset trauma (Briere & Rickards, 2007; Courtois, 2008; van der Kolk 2014). A review of the research also suggests that there is substantial comorbidity between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)/trauma exposure and Substance Use Disorders (SUDs; Colman, 2013; Rosenberg, 2011; Torchalla et al., 2014). However, evidence suggests that the treatment of these problems separately is less effective for populations in which both issues co-occur (Najavits, Weiss, Shaw, & Muenz, 1998; Triffleman, Carroll, & Kellogg, 1999). As a result, there is a need for more integrated approaches. Seeking Safety is an integrated treatment for those who have experienced trauma and have SUDs (Najavits, 2002). In the current study, the effectiveness of Seeking Safety on the reduction of trauma symptoms was examined, specifically regarding the experiences of women with early childhood complex trauma. Participants (n = 44) in an inpatient substance abuse recovery facility attended Seeking Safety groups for 1 month and were given a pre- and post-testing of the Trauma Symptom Inventory-2 (TSI-2). It was predicted that women would show a decrease on trauma symptoms following the participation in group psychotherapy. Consistent with existing research, a significant decrease was found across the Factor Scales on the TSI-2, demonstrating the continued effectiveness of Seeking Safety (Hien et al., 2004; Najavits, 2002; Searcy & Lipps, 2012). However, there were no differences on the TSI-2 Factor scales among women who experienced early childhood complex trauma and those who had not.
