Özet:
This phenomenological study examined internal and external characteristics that contribute to resiliency in veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) who experienced combat-related amputations. Understanding these characteristics might improve therapeutic interventions, providing effective support and care to veterans who experienced combat-related amputations. This project comprised recorded semistructured, in-depth interviews from 10 OIF and OEF veteran males who experienced combat-related amputations. Three themes emerged: hardiness, coping mechanisms, and posttraumatic growth. Characteristics of hardiness---drive to succeed, positive attitude, and confidence---in participants may have contributed to resiliency with the greatest intensity. The study results add to the knowledge on resiliency and may improve therapeutic interventions to help veterans and others overcome traumatic events in life.
