Özet:
This qualitative narrative research study explored the scarcity of African American women occupying positions in the C-suites of American companies. There has been progress in women reaching upper-level positions including those in the C-suite, but it does not necessarily represent all women. The United States Bureau of Labor statistics and census data show significant underrepresentation of African American females in C suite positions. The goal of this research study was to capture the stories, experiences, and perceptions of 15 African American women concerning the influences of historical negative stereotypes and barriers in her pathway to the C-suite. The research method used in this research is a qualitative study with a narrative inquiry design. The qualitative method provided the foundation to understand multiple and different experiences of the African American female in her career pursuit to the C-suite. The narrative inquiry design created a process of inquiry where voluntary participants shared their stories and lived experiences in telephone interviews using semi-structured interview questions. Thematic data analysis was used to arrive at the result of five major themes from the data: Theme 1: Experiences of Negative Historical Stereotypes and C-suite Advancement. Theme 2: Challenges and Unique Barriers to C-suite Advancement. Theme 3: Organizational Culture and Diversity Influences. Theme 4: Influence of Upper Echelon Leaders. Theme 5: Advancement to the C-suite. The results of the research show that African American women are subjected to negative stereotypes, barriers, and challenges and encounter the duality of intersectionality and sexism in their career trajectory to the C-suite.
